AUDITION Notice
‘Ladies Down Under’ by Amanda Whittington, directed by Frank Kaye
Rehearsals start late September, date to be agreed with cast
Performances - 29 Nov to 3 Dec 2022
Audition, Wednesday 20th July at 7.30 in the Oakwood Centre
This funny and heart-warming sequel to Amanda Whittington's popular ‘Ladies Day’ follows the fortunes of four fish packers from Hull who won big on the races and are now following the dream by holidaying 'Down Under' and finding there's more to life than money and fish. Indeed, as Pearl discovers, 'life is what happens when you are busy making other plans'
The Reviews Hub critic reported that “The writing is brilliantly funny, but something unexpected happens on arrival in Oz however, as the pace becomes less frenetic, the humour less coarse and the characterisation deepens” Round the campfire the outback is revealed as less Crocodile Dundee and more as a place of mystic spirituality … and terrifying spiders. Our girls meet some unforgettable characters, falling in love and sorting out their lives along the way, set against a background of Kylie and the Beach Boys.
The characters are
Pearl, retired fish packer, leader of the group, mid fifties
Jan, her work mate, with a ‘mumsy’ image she shakes off, finding passion in Australia - mid forties
Shelley, her work mate, brassy, mid twenties
Linda, her work mate, gullible but good hearted, mid twenties
Male parts, played by two men
Tom, volunteer firefighter
Joe, Jan’s boyfriend
Bill, flight attendant
Ben, flight attendant
Shane, surfer dude
Charlie, aristocratic dropout
Danny, traveller
Koala Bare, drag queen
Bondi Bitch, drag queen
As ever ages are flexible!
