‘Dial M’ is a masterpiece among thrillers; compelling from start to finish, by the author of ‘Wait Until Dark’. Tony is convinced his wife is having an affair, and he plans to murder her – perfectly - leaving himself a cast-iron alibi … but it doesn’t quite go as planned.
The subsequent intricate ducking and weaving, together with real characters and a cracking script make this play a favourite of actors and audience alike.
Margot - 30s/40s – attractive, intelligent and slightly neurotic
Max – similar age to Margot or older, personable American TV murder scriptwriter (Tony is convinced he is having an affair with Margot)
Tony – similar age to Margot, retired pro tennis player, now sells sports equipment. University educated, quick-thinking, cunning and devious
Lesgate – similar age to Tony, but may look older. Was at Cambridge with Tony, looks wealthy and successful, but it’s a sham
Hubbard – police inspector – indeterminate age, slightly shambolic, affable but with a keen mind underneath
Thompson – walk-on, plain clothes police detective – may be played by the same actor as Lesgate
